Bernardo Alcoforado Barreira

Born in Viana do Castelo, he began studying violin at the age of five at the Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian in Braga. After completing his specialist music education diploma, he joined the class of Eliot Lawson and Ilya Grubert at the University of Minho, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree. He then entered the class of Sergiu Schwartz at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne – Site de Sion, graduating with a master’s degree in concert performance. Alongside his studies in Switzerland, he worked regularly with Yair Kless at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and received a grant from the GDA Foundation to attend an annual course with Klaidi Sahatçi in Rome.

He received honourable mentions at the Concurso Paços Premium – Higher Level and the Concurso Internacional de Cordas da Academia de Música Fernandes Fão, and was awarded third prize at the Concurso Internacional Cidade do Fundão – Higher Level.

He has collaborated with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Opéra de Lausanne, with projects taking him to Switzerland and Bhutan. In Portugal, he spent three years with the Orquestra do Norte and has worked as a guest with the Orquestra do Algarve and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, among others. He currently holds a contract with the Orquestra Gulbenkian.

Beyond his performing career, he was a member of the board of the Associação Musical Sinfonietta de Braga, contributing to the development of cultural activities in the city.
