Os Clássicos Vão ao Interior

At the invitation of Os Clássicos Vão ao Interior, the Quarteto Euterpe performed on 16 May 2021 at the Igreja de Vilar de Amargo in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo — one of the most remote regions of the Portuguese interior, on the border with Spain. The festival, dedicated to cultural decentralisation and the bringing of concert music to territories historically distant from major cultural centres, found in this programme a natural partner.

The programme brought together Haydn’s Quartet Op. 76 No. 2 “The Fifths” and Mendelssohn’s Quartet Op. 13 No. 2 — two works separated by decades but sharing an intense relationship with expressivity and formal construction in string quartet writing. The Igreja de Vilar de Amargo, with its acoustics and its presence in the landscape, hosted a repertoire that rarely reaches these latitudes.
